Introduction
The Great Sword in Monster Hunter Wilds requires stacking Critical Rate, which is also known as Crit Rate. So how can you maintain a permanent 100% Crit Rate? Below, we bring you a recommended build for achieving a steady 100% Crit in Monster Hunter Wilds, and we hope you find it useful.
Permanently 100% Crit Build
Weapons and Armor
In this game, the separation of weapons and armor skills, along with numerous changes to skill levels and effects, can lead to very tight armor slots. Although having a continuous 100% Crit Rate is not strictly necessary—such as with the Iceborne Black Dragon Great Sword, where the maximum you can achieve is only about 95%—it can be quite the obsession to aim for.

By optimizing your gear and focusing on the necessary skills, you can enhance your damage output significantly. Experiment with different combinations to find what suits your playstyle best!
R8 Mechanical Weapon Setup
The R8 mechanical weapon can be customized based on your preferences. In multiplayer, I personally enjoy bringing paralysis, while for solo play, I opt for sleep. The restoration affix can be configured with either 2 critical hits + 6 attack or 1 sharpness + 2 critical hits + 5 attack (which gives the weapon a critical hit rate of 15%). Due to fully depleted parts, I had to compromise for the time being.
Armor Choices
For armor, I recommend selecting two pieces of the Thunderjaw armor set to gain extra stamina, combined with two pieces of the Black Dragon armor set to trigger the Frenzy status. The charm used should be Attack Boost 2 to maximize the weak point bonus. The equipment can be tailored to personal preference; you can choose the Armor-boosting set to reduce critical hit pressure, or opt for the Durability or Regeneration set to be more aggressive and endure damage.
Gems and Skills
The skills and gems included are: Concentration, Artisan, Critical Eye III, Attack Boost x3, Counterattack x3, Agility, Anti-Frenzy x2, and Endurance x3 (or Guard x3). With the weapon's built-in 15% critical hit rate, combined with Weak Point Boost of 30%, Spirit of the Thrill at 30%, and the No Mind state at 25%, you can achieve a total of 100% critical hit rate.
Enduring Power of the Thunderjaw Set
The Thunderjaw armor set in Monster Hunter Wilds offers remarkable stamina recovery, even while using enhanced stamina consumption skills. Not only does this set come equipped with level 2 stamina reduction, which cuts stamina costs for dodging and shoulder attacks, but it also allows the Great Sword to recover stamina during charge phases, making it a reliable choice for keeping your energy up in battles.
Counterattack
This skill boosts your attack power for a brief period after being knocked back. The actual effect is triggered by "any attack that causes knockback," which means you can effectively absorb monster attacks with skills that grant hyper armor. This includes the shoulder charge, clash attacks, and using the Invincible Mantle, though regular defense won't activate this skill. At max level, it provides a hefty 25 points of attack power for 45 seconds—an incredibly powerful buff for increasing your damage output.
Stamina Management
While the set offers shoulder charge and clash capabilities, the stun value will still accumulate, which can lead to unexpected stuns from minor hits. It is advisable to equip the set fully, or alternatively, you could slot in three Sacred Protection jewels for excellent defense management.
Focus
The Focus skill enhances the charging speed of certain weapon moves, allowing for quicker transitions in combat situations. When combined with the Thunderjaw armor set, hunters can maximize their effectiveness on the battlefield.
Shortened Charge Times
The charge time for attacks has been reduced, allowing for a quicker transition into three-charge state, which enhances output and weapon clash values. It's crucial to fully utilize the Great Sword's core abilities.
Attack Guard
When activated, this skill increases the base attack power by 15% for 12 seconds. It is commonly used in conjunction with roars or non-physical attacks, making use of this newly introduced skill. Furthermore, the skill's activation window is quite long, so it's not mandatory to engage with the skill directly to trigger it.
Critical Boost
At levels 3 and 5, this skill provides 1.34x and 1.4x critical damage respectively. It's a very important damage-increasing skill that can be sacrificed for those who do not frequently use defense.
Craftsmanship
This skill comes from the Concentration and Attack Guard decorations, providing necessary enhancements especially for the relatively short white damage of the mechanical Great Sword. Additionally, skills like Blade Mastery, Destroyer, and High Resilience are also beneficial.
Earplugs Hero Set
This set essentially replaces two pieces with Earplug decorations. With level 2 earplugs, most roars can be negated. Only battles against the Black Dragon, Frozen Peak Dragon, and Blazing Dragon necessitate reaching level 3 for immunity.

Essential Jewels and Armor Setup
Concentrating on Crafting Jewels, Guard Jewels, Critical Boost III, Attack Jewels x2, Challenger Jewels x2, Counter Jewels x2, Resistance Jewels x2, and Stamina Surge Jewels x3, this setup strategically negates the need for Spirit Boost under the effects of the Thunderjaw Armor Set. When a wound is present, players can achieve a significant 90% critical hit chance through a combination of Weapon Attack (15%) + Weakness Exploit (50%) + Without Limits (25%) = 90%. The remaining 10% is attained via level 4 Challenger skills. Adding Counter can enhance damage when the monster is not enraged.
If the monster is unprovoked, it’s feasible to utilize the Chiseled Armor to compensate for the critical hit rate. Alternatively, one may opt for a weapon that provides even higher crit potential, swapping out Challenger Jewels and armor pieces for other skills.
This setup also allows for flexibility; for instance, the Stamina Surge can be adjusted to Defense, while Counter could be changed to Earplugs. The synergy with the Thunderjaw Armor Set guarantees comfortable health regeneration during battles. However, a notable drawback is that breaking the wound leads to a 20% reduction in critical hit opportunities.
Additionally, this armor configuration provides an extra level 1 slot, which can be utilized based on personal preference. The image above features a Buffering Jewel.

Throughout the history of gameplay, players have often chosen the Great Sword as their primary weapon in Monster Hunter Wilds. The satisfaction derived from both its damage output and mechanics is unparalleled. My previous favorite, the Courage Great Sword, has now been completely overshadowed. I hope future updates will enrich the game further. Personally, I wish for the return of two powerful monsters in the April update, rumored to be stronger than the Elder Dragon. It sounds reasonable that the original Plesioth and the Elder Dragon could make a comeback together... but it’s probably just wishful thinking!
